On Friday, Romanian Defence Minister Ionut Mosteanu announced his resignation, admitting to providing misleading details regarding his academic credentials on his official resume. This decision coincides with the country enhancing its defence stance amidst increasing security threats associated with Russia.
Mosteanu's resignation followed a report by Romanian newspaper Libertatea, uncovering discrepancies in his educational qualifications. The investigation indicated that the graduation dates and the university he cited were inconsistent with official documentation, igniting concerns about his integrity, especially given his prominent role in the national defence hierarchy.
In his resignation statement, Mosteanu took responsibility for the inaccuracies and expressed a desire that his personal “errors” would not detract from Romania’s security initiatives. He emphasized the importance of the defence ministry’s focus on enhancing military readiness, fulfilling NATO obligations, and protecting national interests amid escalating tensions with Russia.
He further asserted that Romania’s security must not be endangered by any controversies related to his background and that resigning was necessary to preserve public confidence. His exit has sparked discussions within Romanian political circles about the significance of transparency and accountability among senior officials.
The Romanian government is anticipated to appoint an interim defence minister shortly, as the nation continues prioritizing defence reforms and military modernization in coordination with European and NATO allies. This incident has also reignited demands for more rigorous verification of the academic and professional histories of all public officials.
Mosteanu’s resignation represents a significant political shift in Romania this month, contributing to ongoing discussions surrounding honesty, governance, and national security during a period of elevated regional tensions.
