Post by : Meena Hassan

Veteran American actress Sally Kirkland, acclaimed for her Oscar-nominated role in the 1987 film Anna, has passed away at 84. Her representative, Michael Greene, confirmed that Kirkland died on Tuesday morning at a hospice in Palm Springs, California.

In recent months, Kirkland faced multiple health challenges, leading friends to initiate a GoFundMe campaign to assist with her medical expenses after she suffered serious fractures. During her recovery, she experienced infections that necessitated hospitalization.

Illustrious Career Across Disciplines

A New York City native, Kirkland was immersed in art and fashion from a young age, thanks to her mother, a Vogue editor. She began modeling at five and later graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, where she trained under notable mentors like Philip Burton and Lee Strasberg.

Her early exposure came in Andy Warhol’s 1964 film, 13 Most Beautiful Women, which paved her way into the New York art scene. Over six decades, she amassed a diverse acting career, featuring in stage plays, television series, and over 200 films.

Notable Works in Cinema

Kirkland's filmography is vibrant, showcasing performances in several iconic films, such as:

  • The Sting (1973) with Paul Newman and Robert Redford

  • The Way We Were alongside Barbra Streisand

  • JFK directed by Oliver Stone

  • Revenge featuring Kevin Costner

  • Cold Feet with Keith Carradine and Tom Waits

  • Bruce Almighty starring Jim Carrey

  • EDtv by Ron Howard

  • Heatwave with Cicely Tyson

  • High Stakes opposite Kathy Bates

She also made appearances in the 1991 TV movie The Haunted, which was based on real-life paranormal events, and had a small role in Mel Brooks’ classic film, Blazing Saddles.

Acclaimed for Her Role in Anna

Kirkland achieved significant acclaim for her portrayal in 1987’s Anna, where she played a former Czech film star seeking to start anew in the U.S. while supportively guiding a young actress, performed by Paulina Porizkova. This film garnered Kirkland critical acclaim, a Golden Globe Best Actress Award, and an Academy Award nomination.

A snapshot from the 1988 Golden Globe Awards features Kirkland alongside Michael Douglas, both celebrating their award-winning performances.

Significant Contributions to Television and Theatre

Her television career was marked by numerous appearances in series like Criminal Minds, Roseanne, and Head Case, along with regular roles in Valley of the Dolls and Charlie’s Angels. On stage, she shone in Terrence McNally’s off-Broadway hit Sweet Eros and took part in Shakespearean classics like A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Tempest at the New York Shakespeare Festival.

Kirkland once reflected on her deep appreciation for classical theatre, stating,

“I believe no actor can truly call themselves an actor without immersing in Shakespeare — it enriches your breath, power, and understanding of language as art.”

Devotion to Spirit, Art, and Service

In addition to her artistic endeavors, Kirkland was a devoted spiritualist and humanitarian, engaging with various New Age movements and teaching transformative seminars. She was a long-standing member of the Church of the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness, devoted to soul transcendence.

Throughout her life, she volunteered extensively for various social causes, including support for AIDS, cancer, and hunger alleviation through American Red Cross efforts, alongside advocating for young prisoners' rehabilitation.

A Pioneering Spirit

Kirkland's career was defined by her audacity and willingness to push boundaries. Her early film Futz (1969) generated controversy with a nude scene involving a pig, drawing mixed reviews, while also branding her as a bold performer. Time magazine once referred to her as the “latter-day Isadora Duncan of nudothespianism,” underlining her fearless artistic and activist approach.

In her later years, she continued to appear in films and made public appearances, with her most recent sighting at the 2015 premiere of Love & Mercy, where she graced the red carpet with her signature style.

From her beginnings in modeling to claiming Hollywood's top honors, Sally Kirkland’s legacy spans nearly seven decades of enriching American entertainment. She is remembered as an unyielding artist, spiritual seeker, and compassionate philanthropist, inspiring numerous performers across generations.
