Veteran American actress Sally Kirkland, acclaimed for her Oscar-nominated role in the 1987 film Anna, has passed away at 84. Her representative, Michael Greene, confirmed that Kirkland died on Tuesday morning at a hospice in Palm Springs, California.
In recent months, Kirkland faced multiple health challenges, leading friends to initiate a GoFundMe campaign to assist with her medical expenses after she suffered serious fractures. During her recovery, she experienced infections that necessitated hospitalization.
Illustrious Career Across Disciplines
A New York City native, Kirkland was immersed in art and fashion from a young age, thanks to her mother, a Vogue editor. She began modeling at five and later graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, where she trained under notable mentors like Philip Burton and Lee Strasberg.
Her early exposure came in Andy Warhol’s 1964 film, 13 Most Beautiful Women, which paved her way into the New York art scene. Over six decades, she amassed a diverse acting career, featuring in stage plays, television series, and over 200 films.

Kirkland achieved significant acclaim for her portrayal in 1987’s Anna, where she played a former Czech film star seeking to start anew in the U.S. while supportively guiding a young actress, performed by Paulina Porizkova. This film garnered Kirkland critical acclaim, a Golden Globe Best Actress Award, and an Academy Award nomination.

On stage, she shone in Terrence McNally’s off-Broadway hit Sweet Eros and took part in Shakespearean classics like A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Tempest at the New York Shakespeare Festival.
Kirkland once reflected on her deep appreciation for classical theatre, stating,
“I believe no actor can truly call themselves an actor without immersing in Shakespeare — it enriches your breath, power, and understanding of language as art.”
Devotion to Spirit, Art, and Service
In addition to her artistic endeavors, Kirkland was a devoted spiritualist and humanitarian, engaging with various New Age movements and teaching transformative seminars. She was a long-standing member of the Church of the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness, devoted to soul transcendence.

In her later years, she continued to appear in films and made public appearances, with her most recent sighting at the 2015 premiere of Love & Mercy, where she graced the red carpet with her signature style.
