In a challenging update for the Calgary Flames, forward Samuel Honzek will be out for up to six months due to upper-body surgery. This setback is significant for both Honzek and the team, particularly as he was finding his rhythm in the NHL. The Flames have announced that this extensive recovery period will prevent him from participating in the rest of the NHL season as well as early offseason training.
Honzek's injury occurred during a match against the Winnipeg Jets on November 15, where he collided with team captain Mikael Backlund. The seriousness of the situation was apparent immediately, and subsequent medical evaluations confirmed that surgery was required. At just 21, Honzek was seen as a beacon of hope for Calgary, making this absence a tough blow for fans and the organization alike.
His recovery timeline also rules him out of representing Team Slovakia in the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina. Although Slovakia had earmarked him as a key player, his rehabilitation will extend well beyond February, preventing him from joining the team. This is a notable loss, given Honzek’s status as one of the emerging stars in Slovakian hockey.
Drafted 16th overall by Calgary in the 2023 NHL Draft, Honzek was viewed as a promising future asset for the franchise. This season, he recorded two goals and four points in 18 games, which may appear modest but was part of a larger adjustment to the NHL’s demands. Coaches and pundits had noted his increasing capability and potential as a forward.
Last year, he saw five games in the NHL but primarily played with Calgary’s AHL affiliate, the Wranglers, tallying eight goals and 21 points across 52 games. Many anticipated further development this season, but this injury postpones his growth to late 2025.
Currently, the Calgary Flames are struggling in the NHL standings, holding a record of 6-13-3. The absence of Honzek adds to the challenges the team faces as they search for consistency in offense and closing games effectively. His injury further complicates an already tough season.
Despite this setback, the Flames are optimistic about Honzek’s future recovery. The medical team will keep a close watch over his rehabilitation, and coaches hope he will make a full return in time for the next training camp next year.
For now, Honzek’s primary concern will be on his recovery and strength rebuilding. Fans from both the Flames and Slovakia are eagerly awaiting his comeback, hoping he returns stronger than before.
