Sania Mirza Celebrates Her 39th: Reflections on Life and Motherhood

Post by : Meena Hassan

Today, Sania Mirza turns 39. Reflecting on her journey, she noted, “While I can’t claim to be wiser, I am definitely more patient. I've learned to appreciate the little moments even more.” The accomplished tennis player shared that her birthday isn't a grand affair. “I enjoy the presence of my family and friends but prefer keeping things low-key, savoring the day in peaceful company,” she remarked.

Her tone brightens as she discusses her son Izhaan, whom she shares with ex-husband Shoaib Malik. “I am incredibly proud of who he is becoming. He embodies kindness and empathy, showing me a depth of unconditional love that has transformed my life as a mother and made me a better individual,” she mentioned.

On whether Izhaan has expressed an interest in sports, she said, “This is a frequent question since my pregnancy. His passion for sports is evident, whether it's football, tennis, swimming, or even drumming. What matters most is his happiness and commitment; I want to give him the freedom to choose, just as I was raised.”

Discussing life after tennis, Sania expressed her enjoyment of this new chapter. “One of the incredible perks of being an athlete is retiring early enough to explore new avenues post-career. I consider myself fortunate to embrace this change. We recently launched a podcast, I'm getting into pickleball, and I also manage my own tennis academy. Plus, I engage in mentorship programs and motivational speaking, which bring me joy,” she stated.

When asked about a potential return to tennis, she replied, “Having had a 20-year professional career, I feel certain that chapter is closed. I remember the discussions during my pregnancy regarding retirement; my goal was always to return. However, upon my recent retirement, I recognized that I couldn't be at my best anymore. Thus, a comeback is simply not in the plans.”
