With wedding season nearing, stylists and designers point to a clear fashion shift: pairing jackets with sarees. This update keeps the saree’s graceful silhouette while introducing a structured, contemporary layer that is both stylish and functional.
Once largely confined to festive wardrobes, the saree is being restyled to suit modern occasions. Celebrities such as Sonam Kapoor and Bhumi Pednekar have showcased the pairing, helping the look gain wider acceptance among brides and guests.
The New Saree Look: A Mix of Tradition and Confidence
Nishit Gupta, director and co-founder of label Kalki, says the jacket-over-saree is a logical evolution for Indian dressing. "The jacket-over-saree look balances tradition with modern design. It adds power and confidence to the saree while keeping its timeless charm," he said.
Gupta adds that contemporary women expect outfits that are attractive and comfortable. "It’s no longer about just looking elegant. It’s about feeling strong and independent in what you wear," he noted.
Fashion Meets Functionality
Manjula Tiwari, Managing Director and CEO of Ancestry, highlights how jackets bring structure to flowing drapes. "Jackets over sarees reimagine traditional dressing through a fresh, modern lens," she said.
She explains the style suits many settings: from brocade jackets over silk for formal weddings to floral capes paired with pastel sarees for daytime events. The added layer also addresses cooler-season needs without compromising aesthetics.
The Trend of Power Dressing
Ashray Gujral of Dash and Dot describes the trend as power dressing rooted in tradition. "It’s confident, unexpected, and still deeply Indian," he said, noting his brand’s festive line of metallic blazers, pleated drapes and knit pieces that blend glamour with cultural touchstones.
Gujral believes the jacket lends an edge to the saree, letting women project both heritage and strength in their appearance.
Why Women Love It
Stylists point to versatility as a major draw. The combination can be understated for work or elevated for receptions: a linen saree with a cotton jacket for minimal styling, or a silk saree with an embroidered jacket for celebratory looks. The approach accommodates different ages and tastes while offering extra coverage and comfort.
Perfect for Winter Weddings
As winter nuptials approach, experts say the jacket layer is practical and photogenic, replacing bulkier wraps. It keeps wearers warm while maintaining a polished silhouette.
"You can be wrapped in a saree that feels classic while wearing a jacket that feels modern. It’s comfort meeting couture," Gupta said.
A Style That’s Here to Stay
Observers expect the saree-with-jacket pairing to outlast a single season. By combining Indian textiles with Western tailoring, the trend reflects broader shifts in fashion where tradition is updated to meet contemporary needs and global influences.
