Saskatchewan Tow Truck Operator Rescues Moose from Icy Peril

Post by : Shweta

In a commendable act of kindness, a tow truck operator in Saskatchewan has garnered attention for rescuing a young moose ensnared in ice near his hometown, ensuring the fatigued animal's swift recovery.

Clint Gottinger, the owner of Rebel Towing in Kelvington, spotted the distressed moose while en route to work on Saturday evening. Rather than continuing with his planned jobs, he made a quick decision to assist the animal.

Gottinger recounted feeling unable to abandon the moose when he saw how drained and vulnerable it appeared in the bitter cold. He decided to prioritize the rescue over all other tasks.

He cautiously maneuvered his tow truck close to the icy edge and unfurled the flatbed. Employing a soft recovery sling intended for towing, he gently sought to lift the moose without causing it harm. According to Gottinger, the creature was apprehensive but too exhausted to put up much resistance.

Wrapping the sling around the moose, he used the winch system to slowly draw it to the truck bed. Local residents joined forces to aid in the challenging rescue, successfully hoisting the moose onto the tow truck.

After the successful rescue, Gottinger transported the moose to his home, where it could recuperate and warm up. While en route, he informed his wife to get blankets ready for their surprise guest—a moose.

Upon arrival, the family covered the moose with blankets, letting it rest quietly in their yard. Gottinger noted that the moose was exceptionally weak and remained there for several hours, gradually regaining strength.

Throughout Sunday, the moose lingered around the family's property, wandering off only the next morning, appearing healthier and more stable. Gottinger affectionately named the moose "Rebel" after his towing company.

Images and videos of the rescue swiftly circulated on social media, earning widespread accolades for Gottinger's swift action and compassion. The incident sparked numerous positive reactions, highlighting a touching moment in the community.

Wildlife experts weighed in on the rescue, with Ryan Brook, a professor at the University of Saskatchewan, noting that young moose typically have a better chance of recovery in such situations, particularly in milder weather. He cautioned, however, about potential stress-related issues following traumatic experiences.

Brook stated that moose saved from precarious situations can suffer from capture myopathy, leading to serious muscle, heart, or kidney disorders following extreme stress. He advised that rescued animals tend to remain in safe zones for several days to recuperate.

Despite these risks, Brook expressed optimism for the moose's survival as long as it maintained healthy eating, drinking, and resting routines post-rescue.

Wildlife experts reiterated that large animals, including moose, might behave unpredictably when frightened or injured, urging individuals to contact wildlife agencies during such rescue situations.

For Gottinger, the act of rescuing was a simple gesture of compassion. He reflected on how the story brought joy to many online, emphasizing the importance of sharing uplifting narratives.

The moose ultimately returned to its natural habitat after a two-day recovery period near Gottinger's home, culminating in what many in the community regard as an unforgettable rescue tale.
