On November 14, as the Bihar Assembly Elections 2025 vote counting unfolded, a beloved culinary item captivated attention—the cherished Bihari sattu paratha. While initial indications suggested the NDA coalition led by BJP and JD(U) was on track to achieve a majority, the lively atmosphere within the BJP office was enhanced by the engaging culinary activity.
Footage from ANI highlighted party workers gathered together, joyfully preparing steaming sattu parathas. Their ingredients were perfectly organized, showcasing teamwork reminiscent of family unity. When inquired about the dish being crafted, a worker beamed with pride, stating, “Humare paas sab vyavastha hai. Meethe mein jalebi, aur sattu ke parathe aur baingan ka choka.” This illustrates the vital role food plays, bringing comfort during the high-stress experience of election results.
Sattu paratha, a staple of Bihar, consists of boiled wheat flour dough encasing roasted gram flour filling known as sattu. This delectable dish is simple yet satisfying and is traditionally savored with curd, pickles, or baingan ka chokha.
The recipe for crafting the ideal sattu paratha is straightforward. To prepare the dough, blend whole wheat flour with warm water until it reaches a soft consistency. For the filling, mix sattu with chopped onions, green chilies, garlic, ginger, kala jeera, coriander leaves, mustard oil, and a touch of mango pickle to amplify flavor. If the mixture appears dry, a splash of warm water can be added.
Once the dough and filling are prepared, divide the dough into small portions. Roll each portion slightly, insert the stuffing, seal it, and subsequently roll it out into a thick paratha. Cook the paratha on a hot tawa with a drizzle of ghee or oil until both sides achieve a golden hue.
Sattu parathas are not merely delicious; they embody Bihar’s rich culinary heritage. On this election day, they provided warmth and a sense of community amid the whirlwind of vote counting. As political fervor soared throughout the state, the humble sattu paratha served as a reminder of shared customs and togetherness.
