Saudi Arabia is preparing to enter the global cricket scene in a big way. FairBreak and Saudi Cricket have confirmed a major five-year agreement to launch the Women’s World T20 Challenge in the Kingdom starting in 2026. This will be the first-ever professional women’s cricket tournament held in Saudi Arabia, marking a historic step for the country’s sports development.
According to the official announcement, the new league will include women cricketers from more than 35 countries, making it one of the most diverse women’s cricket events in the world. This wide participation is expected to bring global attention and help Saudi Arabia become a stronger presence in the cricket community.
FairBreak, a private organisation established in 2013, focuses on promoting gender equality in sports. The company is known for organizing the FairBreak Global Invitational T20 tournaments, which took place in Dubai in 2022 and Hong Kong in 2023. A third edition planned in the USA faced delays and ultimately did not happen.
The earlier FairBreak Invitational tournaments were officially approved by the ICC and featured six teams. Many top international cricketers, including Chamari Athapaththu, Sophie Ecclestone, Laura Wolvaardt, and Marizanne Kapp, participated in the event. However, Indian players could not join as the BCCI did not issue No-Objection Certificates. It remains uncertain whether Indian players will be allowed to participate in the new event in Saudi Arabia.
FairBreak and Saudi Cricket confirmed that the new Women’s World T20 Challenge supports the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, the country’s national plan to grow sports, tourism, and youth participation. The project aims to build strong training systems, inspire upcoming female athletes, and create more opportunities for women to compete at an international level.
The league will not only promote cricket but also encourage global cooperation by inviting players, coaches, and officials from different parts of the world. This step reflects the Kingdom’s effort to become a hub for international sports.
Saudi Arabia’s interest in cricket has been growing fast. In 2024, the IPL auction was held in Jeddah, which drew worldwide attention. The country has also shown support for new global cricket initiatives, including a proposed Grand Slam-style set of T20 leagues.
Saudi Arabia is expected to host some matches in future seasons of the ILT20, further strengthening its connection with international cricket tournaments.
With the launch of the Women’s World T20 Challenge, Saudi Arabia is taking a major step toward building a strong future for women’s cricket in the region. The tournament is expected to create new pathways for local female players while giving fans a chance to watch top international talent.
The partnership between FairBreak and Saudi Cricket will open doors for more women to take part in the sport, develop their skills, and become part of a global cricketing community. This move is likely to increase interest in cricket among young girls in the Kingdom and inspire future generations.
