Saudi Arabia Boosts Ocean Protection with UN Cooperation

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Saudi Arabia is taking important steps to protect the world's oceans and marine life. Yesterday, the Kingdom’s Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Abdulrahman Alfadley, met with the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean, Ambassador Peter Thomson. This meeting reflects Saudi Arabia's strong commitment to global environmental protection and the sustainable use of marine resources.

The discussion focused on ways to enhance cooperation between Saudi Arabia and the United Nations in various areas, with a special focus on safeguarding marine environments. Both parties explored strategies to ensure that ocean ecosystems are preserved while supporting sustainable economic growth in line with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. This vision emphasizes the importance of environmental sustainability as a key part of the Kingdom’s long-term development plans.

Minister Alfadley highlighted Saudi Arabia’s ongoing initiatives to improve ocean health and protect marine species. He emphasized that the Kingdom is committed to international collaboration, knowledge sharing, and using advanced technologies to monitor and manage the marine environment effectively. Ambassador Peter Thomson praised Saudi Arabia for its proactive role in global efforts to conserve biodiversity and maintain clean and healthy seas.

The meeting also included discussions about specific projects and programs that aim to reduce ocean pollution, manage fisheries sustainably, and protect coral reefs and other critical habitats. Both sides agreed on the importance of joint research, training, and capacity-building initiatives to ensure the long-term preservation of the planet’s natural resources. These efforts are not only vital for the environment but also for local communities that depend on marine resources for their livelihoods.

Furthermore, Saudi Arabia plans to strengthen partnerships with other nations and international organizations to tackle global challenges related to climate change, overfishing, and marine pollution. By collaborating with the UN and other partners, the Kingdom seeks to play a leading role in promoting sustainable oceans and supporting international environmental agreements.

This engagement with the United Nations reinforces Saudi Arabia’s position as a key player in global sustainability initiatives. It demonstrates the country’s commitment to balancing economic development with environmental protection, ensuring that future generations can benefit from healthy oceans and thriving marine ecosystems.

The meeting between Minister Alfadley and Ambassador Thomson marks another important milestone in Saudi Arabia’s journey toward comprehensive environmental stewardship. It also highlights the Kingdom’s dedication to fulfilling its Vision 2030 goals while contributing to global efforts to conserve our planet’s precious oceans and marine resources.

Saudi Arabia’s active collaboration with the United Nations reflects its leadership in marine protection and sustainable development. By combining policy, innovation, and international cooperation, the Kingdom aims to secure a healthier, cleaner, and more sustainable future for oceans and marine life worldwide.
