Saudi Arabia has achieved a significant milestone in its growing space ambitions after being elected as the First Vice-Chair of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS). The appointment marks an important step for the Kingdom as it expands its presence in global space governance and international scientific cooperation.
The announcement was made during the latest COPUOS session in Vienna, where member states selected Saudi Arabia for the senior leadership position. The Kingdom will be represented by Muryah Al-Shahrani, General Manager of Space Systems and Infrastructure at the Saudi Space Agency, who is widely recognized for his contributions to space policy and technological development.
COPUOS is one of the world's most influential space organizations and serves as the primary international forum for discussions related to the peaceful use of outer space. The committee brings together 110 member states to address challenges such as space debris, satellite operations, orbital safety, climate monitoring and international space law.
As First Vice-Chair, Saudi Arabia will become part of the committee’s five-member Bureau, which plays a crucial role in guiding discussions, building consensus among nations and helping shape policies that govern future space activities. The position gives the Kingdom a stronger voice in decisions affecting the future of global space exploration and sustainability.
Al-Shahrani has been actively involved in several international space initiatives and has contributed to projects focused on Space Situational Awareness, a field dedicated to tracking and managing activities in Earth's increasingly crowded orbital environment. His expertise is expected to strengthen Saudi Arabia’s participation in global space policy discussions.
The election reflects growing international confidence in Saudi Arabia’s commitment to peaceful space development and international cooperation. In recent years, the Kingdom has invested heavily in satellite technologies, scientific research, astronaut programs and strategic partnerships aimed at building a competitive national space sector.
Saudi officials described the appointment as recognition of the Kingdom’s expanding role in the global space economy. The achievement is expected to further support Saudi Arabia’s long-term vision of becoming a leading contributor to innovation, advanced technologies and sustainable space exploration on the international stage.
