The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia organized a ministerial dialogue called “Water Diplomacy: a Bridge for Sustainable Development and Cooperation” on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly. The session brought together ministers and officials from around the world to discuss water management and international collaboration.
Opening Remarks By Prince Faisal
Minister of Foreign Affairs Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah opened the session, welcoming participants and thanking UN partners. He said the meeting aims to set a clear path for international cooperation on water, which is essential for global security, economic growth, and resilience.
Importance Of Water Diplomacy
Prince Faisal explained that water challenges are increasing globally, making international cooperation vital. He said water diplomacy can help countries build trust and turn shared water challenges into opportunities for joint progress. He also highlighted Saudi Arabia’s experience in addressing water scarcity through desalination, efficient use, reuse, and international cooperation.
Launch Of Global Water Organization
The foreign minister announced the establishment of the Global Water Organization, based in Riyadh, which will support innovation, technology transfer, and global water collaboration. He invited all UN member states to join the organization. He also said that Saudi Arabia will host the 11th World Water Forum in 2027 to further strengthen cooperation on water issues.
Protecting Maritime Corridors
Prince Faisal highlighted the importance of maritime corridors, which are key for global energy, food, and trade transport. He warned that threats to these routes can harm supply chains, economies, and the environment. He stressed that protecting maritime routes requires collective international action and is vital for global development and security.
Saudi Commitment To Global Cooperation
Prince Faisal reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s commitment to protecting coasts and maritime routes, advancing water diplomacy, and promoting innovation to encourage sustainable growth and international cooperation.

The session was attended by Princess Reema bint Bandar, Saudi Ambassador to the USA; Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Climate Envoy; Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Rassi, Deputy Minister for International Multilateral Affairs; and Dr. Abdulaziz Alwasil, Permanent Representative of Saudi Arabia to the UN.
