Saudi Pavilion Uses Robot to Include Disabled Visitors at Expo

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

At Expo 2025 Osaka, the Saudi Pavilion showcased an innovative robot developed by “temi Robots Company.” This robot was the result of a collaboration between King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Tokotoko Earth Company, and IPresence Company. The main goal of this project was to make the pavilion accessible to Japanese families with children with disabilities. Through this advanced technology, these visitors could take part in the pavilion’s events remotely. The robot allowed them to experience live tours of exhibition halls and rooms as if they were physically present.

Collaboration Between Technology and Science

The partnership between KAUST and the robot companies highlighted the potential of combining scientific research with practical innovation. KAUST contributed technical expertise and research support, while Tokotoko Earth Company and IPresence Company provided operational and technological solutions. Together, they created a robot that could interact with visitors and guide them through the pavilion virtually. This collaboration demonstrates how scientific institutions and companies can work together to address social challenges using technology.

Enabling Virtual Inclusion for Children

The robot was specifically designed to help children with disabilities experience cultural and educational events. By navigating the exhibition halls in real-time, it gave families the chance to participate in the pavilion’s activities without physical constraints. This approach not only broadened access but also offered an engaging and interactive experience for children who might otherwise face limitations attending such events. Parents reported that the robot made their children feel included and part of the international exhibition experience.

Human Empathy and Technology Combined

Saudi Ambassador to Japan and General Commissioner of the Saudi Pavilion, Dr. Ghazi Binzaqr, emphasized the human impact of this initiative. He stated, “The Pavilion's collaboration with KAUST is more than just a technological event; it demonstrates how human empathy and innovation can work hand in hand. They must come together to create an inclusive environment and provide valuable opportunities for everyone.” This statement reflects the pavilion’s commitment to accessibility, inclusion, and the use of technology for social good.

Promoting Inclusive Exhibitions Globally

The Saudi Pavilion’s use of this robot sets an example for other international exhibitions. It shows that technology can make cultural events more inclusive and accessible to all people, regardless of physical limitations. This initiative aligns with global efforts to create environments where everyone can participate fully in cultural, scientific, and educational experiences. By showcasing this innovation at Expo 2025 Osaka, Saudi Arabia highlighted its focus on combining creativity, technology, and empathy to serve society.

Future of Accessible Technology

This project points toward the future of accessible technology in exhibitions and public spaces. Innovations like this robot could be implemented in museums, science centers, and other cultural events worldwide. By integrating robotics with virtual interaction, institutions can ensure that more people, especially those with disabilities, can enjoy experiences that were previously out of reach. The Saudi Pavilion continues to lead by example, promoting inclusion and demonstrating how technology can serve as a bridge for people everywhere.
