New Cavities Found in Menkaure Pyramid, Giza

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Recent archaeological investigations have unveiled two concealed voids within the Pyramid of Menkaure located in Giza, igniting excitement over a possible lost entryway to the ancient burial site. This revelation provides new insights into the smallest of the three principal pyramids of the Giza complex, which towers at nearly 200 feet and is thought to have been constructed around 2510 BC during the Fourth Dynasty of Egypt.

The research team, a partnership between Cairo University and Germany's Technical University of Munich (TUM), employed state-of-the-art non-invasive scanning technologies to explore the structure while preserving its historical integrity. Utilizing methods such as georadar, ultrasound, and electrical resistance tomography, they successfully identified air-filled cavities behind the pyramid’s external layer.

The newly discovered voids measure 4.6 feet and 3.7 feet in depth, with one cavity stretching approximately 3.2 feet in height and 4.9 feet in width, while the other reaches about 3 feet high and 2.3 feet wide. Located adjacent to an unusual cluster of polished granite blocks on the eastern side, these voids have sparked theories regarding a secondary hidden entrance, a concept previously posited by Stijn van den Hoven in 2019.

This finding comes on the heels of a significant 2023 discovery when ScanPyramids researchers identified an undisclosed chamber within the Great Pyramid of Khufu. The recent Menkaure findings reinforce the potential of advanced, non-destructive methodologies to reveal concealed structures in ancient edifices, providing invaluable insights without causing harm.

Despite its smaller stature compared to neighboring pyramids, the Pyramid of Menkaure continues to unfold secrets that enrich our comprehension of ancient Egyptian architectural prowess and the rituals associated with royal burials in the Fourth Dynasty.
