In light of escalating rumors regarding former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s health, the Rawalpindi government has enacted Section 144 across the district for a duration of three days. Issued by Deputy Commissioner Dr Hassan Waqar Cheema, the directive spans December 1 to 3 and prohibits public gatherings and various activities to ensure law and order.
This decision aligns with plans from Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), to stage protests demanding access to their imprisoned leader. Khan has been incarcerated in Adiala Jail since August 2023 due to several convictions, which he argues are politically motivated. His family has reported being unable to communicate with him for over a month.
The imposed restrictions include bans on all assemblies, rallies, and gatherings of five or more individuals. Additionally, carrying any weapons or items that could facilitate violence, such as batons or petrol bombs, is strictly prohibited. The display of arms, hate speech, pillion riding, and the use of loudspeakers are also outlawed. The order emphasizes that any efforts to dismantle police barriers or disrupt traffic control will not be tolerated.
Officials noted that this precautionary measure is a response to intelligence suggesting attempts by certain groups to organize large gatherings and target sensitive areas. The administration maintains that these restrictions are crucial for public safety and preserving peace.
Simultaneously, Imran Khan’s sons have escalated their calls for verification of his condition. In discussions with Reuters, Kasim Khan stated the family has received no credible updates for months despite a court ruling allowing weekly visits. He described their experience as “psychological torture,” fearing that critical information about their father’s well-being is being withheld. Currently, there is “no verifiable information at all” available regarding his status.
The ongoing uncertainty surrounding Khan’s health and the heightened security measures in Rawalpindi have intensified the already fraught political climate, with PTI supporters demanding clarity and access to their former leader as the city braces for a time of increased restrictions.
