Three decades have passed since the untimely passing of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, known as the Queen of Tejano music, yet her legacy and impact on Latin music remain profound. A new documentary, Selena Y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy, directed by Isabel Castro and produced by Selena's siblings, Suzette and AB Quintanilla III, aims to commemorate that legacy, set to premiere on Netflix this Monday.
“Who better than us to tell our story?” Suzette Quintanilla expresses, emphasizing the significance of a familial portrayal.
The project emerged after the family approached Castro, won over by her 2022 film Mija. “Suzette and I instantly clicked,” Castro notes. “As older sisters, we understood the unique challenges of balancing Mexican American heritage and identity.”
This documentary utilizes the family’s wealth of archival materials, which Suzette endearingly refers to as “the vault.” Over time, Castro and the Quintanilla family meticulously sorted through home videos, raw footage, DVDs, and digital files to curate the most poignant moments that reveal Selena’s life as a sister, daughter, and friend, beyond her star status.
Intimate highlights include home movies filmed by Suzette, a personal letter from Selena to her husband Chris Pérez, and clips from the family's initial tour bus, affectionately named Big Bertha. Remarkably, Selena’s mother, Marcella Quintanilla, who has seldom spoken about her daughter publicly, shares heartfelt memories and photographs for the first time.
For Castro, this documentary presented a chance to portray Selena as a young woman navigating her life, emphasizing that she passed away at just 23. “The home video showcased the reality of her youth,” Castro reflects.
While various narratives have captured Selena’s life and the tragedy of her death, including the 1997 film featuring Jennifer Lopez and a 2020 series on Netflix, this documentary consciously steers clear of focusing on the circumstances of her murder. “This film centers on joy and empowerment, celebrating a Latina’s life, our growth, and collective experiences,” Castro states.
Additionally, the film brings to light lesser-known facets of Selena’s journey: her experiences as a bilingual artist, her rise in the music scene, and her marriage to Pérez, which stirred family tensions at the time. Exclusively relying on testimonies from the Quintanilla family and Los Dinos band members, it crafts a deeply personal narrative devoid of outside analysis.
Suzette hopes viewers will feel motivated by the film, especially younger audiences. “This film continues her legacy, our shared legacy,” she says. “We aspire to inspire those who have dreams to chase them.”
Selena Y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy serves as a tribute to life, music, and the lasting influence of an icon cherished by many.
