Serena Williams has decisively put to rest speculation surrounding a potential return to professional tennis after her name was unexpectedly included in the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s (ITIA) anti-doping testing pool. Having last played at the 2022 US Open, Williams has enjoyed more than two years away from the court.
As per ITIA regulations, athletes listed in the testing pool are required to provide daily whereabouts information and be available for random testing. This listing generated considerable buzz online, with many fans speculating that the 44-year-old icon might be mulling over a return to the game.
However, Williams was quick to quell the rumors. On X, she stated:
“Omg y’all I’m NOT coming back. This wildfire is crazy.”
Despite the speculation, questions linger regarding why her name resurfaced in the testing pool; her representatives have not yet commented. Under ITIA guidelines, a retired athlete wishing to return must complete at least six months of out-of-competition testing prior to entering sanctioned events.
The chatter regarding a possible return escalated last week when Williams posted images of herself on a tennis court with her younger daughter, Adira River, born in August 2023. These pictures stirred excitement in the tennis community, where many still cherish hopes of seeing the champion back in action.
Serena Williams formally retired in 2022, stating she was "evolving away from the sport" to devote more time to family and new opportunities. With a record 23 Grand Slam singles titles, she remains the most successful women's player of the Open Era. Throughout her career, she pursued a historic 24th major that would have equalled Margaret Court’s all-time record. After giving birth to her first daughter, Olympia, in 2017, she reached four Grand Slam finals but narrowly missed adding to her illustrious achievements.
While fans continue to hope for her return, Williams has reiterated that competing again is not in her future — effectively closing the door on the latest wave of comeback speculation.
