Catastrophic Flooding in Central Vietnam Leaves 90 Dead

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Central Vietnam is facing its most severe flooding and landslides in recent weeks, confirming at least 90 casualties due to intense rains earlier this week. Numerous villages are submerged, significant highways are impassable, and railway services are disrupted, trapping thousands.

This environmental crisis is exacerbated by previous heavy rainfall and Typhoon Kalmaegi, which significantly hampered recovery efforts in affected regions. In the Central Highlands, landslides from ongoing rain have ravaged roads, complicating access for emergency relief teams.

First responders are confronting difficult conditions to assist those in distress. Reports indicate widespread destruction of homes, loss of crops, and damage to electricity and communication infrastructure, leaving many in rural areas cut off. Local healthcare facilities are overwhelmed as they address injuries and urgent health concerns.

As one of the globe’s most flood-prone nations, nearly half of Vietnam’s population resides in high-risk areas. Experts have cautioned that climate change is amplifying the frequency and severity of storms across Southeast Asia, transforming seasonal rain into perilous floods.

Communities prepare for ongoing rainfall as rescue efforts continue, with government officials advising residents to remain indoors and avoid flooded regions.
