Toronto is under a special weather statement as two consecutive weather systems are predicted to deliver as much as 10 centimetres of snow by Wednesday.
The alert was issued on Tuesday afternoon. Environment Canada has indicated that an Alberta Clipper system is expected to spread heavy snow across the region. Travel conditions may become “difficult at times,” with the potential for “reduced visibility in heavy and blowing snow.”
Weather reporter Lyndsay Morrison has noted that the first of the systems began impacting the area on Tuesday afternoon, anticipated to bring around 3 centimetres of snow to Toronto, while the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) could expect anywhere from 2 to 5 centimetres. Snowfall is likely to ease by 8 p.m., followed by some flurries, as the second system approaches overnight, adding another 3 centimetres for the city.
Areas in Ontario may witness higher snowfall totals due to lake effect from strong winds. Kitchener is forecasted to receive 14 cm, London 16 cm, while regions north of Toronto, such as Orillia and Caledon, could see up to 12 cm combined from both weather systems.
The second system might bring rain on Wednesday, potentially creating a slushy mix as temperatures rise slightly before dropping again on Thursday.
The City of Toronto has announced that salting operations will start once snow adheres to road surfaces, and sidewalk clearing will begin if at least 2 cm accumulates. Officials are advising residents to drive with “extra caution” on Wednesday, particularly during peak morning and evening commuting times. The combination of rain and snow may lead to slippery conditions on the roads and sidewalks.
Temperatures are projected to remain close to 0°C, though wind chill may make it feel like -11°C. A high of 2°C is expected on Wednesday, with snow transitioning to rain in parts of the GTA.
