Pakistan's newly appointed ODI captain Shaheen Afridi has shared an inspiring message with his teammates as they gear up for the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, commencing this Tuesday in Rawalpindi. In statements made via the International Cricket Council (ICC), Afridi encouraged the squad to sustain the momentum from their recent 2-1 series win over South Africa. This series presents Pakistan’s second major 50-over challenge since their underwhelming performance in the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year.
Afridi emphasized the significance of the series win against South Africa, citing it as a crucial boost for team morale. “The victory over South Africa in Faisalabad elevated our confidence. It was my inaugural series as ODI captain, and I was truly proud of how the players tackled various situations and came together as a team,” Afridi remarked. He praised the squad’s energy, intent, and collaboration, highlighting their strong spirit throughout the series.
The left-arm fast bowler stated that Pakistan's primary objective now is to enhance their consistency in performances. “As we head into the Sri Lanka series, our aim is to carry forward that winning momentum. We seek to establish greater consistency across our performances and ensure improvement in every facet of our game,” he stated. Afridi underscored the necessity of maintaining equilibrium in batting, bowling, and fielding to solidify Pakistan’s status as a formidable ODI unit.
Afridi expressed admiration for Sri Lanka’s structured style and skillful gameplay. “Sri Lanka is a disciplined squad that consistently presents challenges with their skills. We must play astutely, adhere to our plans, and maintain a positive mindset,” he noted. He asserted that focusing on strategic execution, keenly observing match circumstances, and remaining composed under pressure is paramount. The captain cautioned his players about the importance of leveraging home advantage while respecting their opponents.
Afridi pointed out that success in modern cricket hinges on teamwork rather than individual brilliance. “Every player must step up. It is not solely Shaheen, Fakhar (Zaman), Babar (Azam), or Saim’s (Ayub) responsibility; everyone must strive for excellence,” he emphasized. He added that players should support one another, even during downturns, as a cohesive and positive team environment fosters confidence and unity. “We should back those who are struggling and maintain faith in our collective capability,” he stated firmly.
The Pakistan skipper articulated his ultimate aspiration is for the team to deliver performances that resonate positively with their fans. “Our mission is to evolve collectively and offer performances that make our fans proud,” he articulated. Afridi believes that with unity and discipline, Pakistan’s ODI squad has the intrinsic talent and potential to rank among the world's elite teams.
The squad for the three-match ODI series features a robust mix of experience and youth. Key players include Shaheen Afridi (captain), Abrar Ahmed, Babar Azam, Faheem Ashraf, Faisal Akram, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Haseebullah, Hussain Talat, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan, Mohammad Wasim Jr., Naseem Shah, Saim Ayub, and Salman Ali Agha.
This lineup underscores Pakistan's commitment to nurturing a versatile group of players capable of thriving under various conditions. With the series set to commence in Rawalpindi, the team aims to sustain its winning rhythm and fortify their composition ahead of upcoming international fixtures.
Under Shaheen Afridi’s leadership, a new chapter begins for Pakistan’s 50-over cricket. His prowess in motivating and unifying the team has already yielded positive results, and the Sri Lanka series presents another opportunity for boosting their confidence. Fans across Pakistan will closely monitor the Men in Green as they strive to extend their winning streak and forge a path towards a more cohesive and competitive ODI future.
