Shakib Al Hasan Set to Conclude Career with Farewell Series in Bangladesh

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

In a touching revelation, former Bangladesh cricket captain Shakib Al Hasan has announced his intention to wrap up his remarkable international career on home turf. The 38-year-old all-rounder, consistently hailed as Bangladesh’s finest cricketer, shared his wish to participate in a complete series across all formats – Test, One Day International, and T20 – before formally stepping away from international cricket.

Shakib, who previously served as a prominent parliamentary member for the Awami League during former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's rule, departed Bangladesh amidst political turmoil following the government's fall last year. Despite these concerns, he reassured fans that he has not officially retired from all formats and dreams of a fitting farewell in front of his home crowd.

On the “Beard Before Wicket” podcast, Shakib stated, “I am officially not retired from all formats. My plan is to return to Bangladesh, participate in a full series of ODI, Test, and T20, and retire. I aspire to conclude my international career playing a complete series in each format.”

The cricketing legend last donned the national colors during his 71st Test match against India last year, after which he stepped back from T20 Internationals. He had previously requested a farewell series in Bangladesh during his tenure against South Africa, but the interim government could not assure his safety due to his political past.

Meanwhile, Shakib remains active in global T20 leagues, hoping to don the Bangladesh jersey once more. “I am hopeful. That’s why I’m playing T20 leagues. I think it will happen,” he remarked, expressing his intent to conclude his career in the nation where he has carved out his cricketing legacy.

Shakib Al Hasan’s announcement has ignited enthusiasm among Bangladeshi cricket enthusiasts, eagerly anticipating the opportunity to bid farewell to their cricket idol on home soil. His legacy, marked by over a decade of outstanding performances, record-setting feats, and dedicated leadership, serves as a beacon for aspiring cricketers in Bangladesh.

This heartfelt declaration emphasizes Shakib’s lasting connection with Bangladesh cricket and his aim to finish a distinguished career with grace, ensuring fans can celebrate one final chapter of his invaluable contributions to the national team.
