In a major diplomatic turnaround, the United States has lifted sanctions against Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, just before his important visit to Washington. This decision, announced by the State Department on Friday, signifies a crucial development in U.S.-Syria relations as Sharaa engages with U.S. officials on significant security initiatives.
Previously regarded as a "Specially Designated Global Terrorist," Sharaa had connections to various extremist groups including Al-Qaeda, and even had a bounty placed on his head by the U.S. His recent delisting follows a resolution led by the U.S. at the United Nations Security Council to remove UN sanctions imposed on him.
State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott noted that these actions reflect "progress shown by the Syrian leadership after Bashar al-Assad's departure and over five decades of repression under his regime." The U.S. emphasized that Sharaa’s administration is working collaboratively on essential matters including the retrieval of missing Americans and eliminating any remaining chemical weapons.
Sharaa’s swift rise to power last year, supported by Turkey and Gulf Arab nations, has altered Syria’s political dynamics. His forces quickly ascended to dominance through an aggressive campaign, establishing control over significant areas. The forthcoming White House meeting, slated for Monday, is being observed closely as President Donald Trump appears to extend his backing for Sharaa’s new regime.
Regional stakeholders have expressed caution. Israel, traditionally suspicious of Syria’s leadership, initially resisted diplomatic outreach and has executed military missions in Syria since Assad's ousting to mitigate perceived threats. Likewise, Sharaa’s collaboration with the U.S. hints at a potential realignment of regional alliances.
This decision is viewed as a pragmatic move by Washington that highlights both strategic imperatives and the shifting landscape in Syria. Experts suggest Sharaa’s upcoming visit may pave the way for novel economic and security partnerships, although challenges loom ahead.
