The Sharjah Social Services Department (SSSD), through its Office of Age-Friendly Quality and Health Services, held an online workshop at the request of the Kuwaiti Ministry of Health.
The workshop focused on sharing Sharjah’s experience in creating an age-friendly city. Sharjah was the first Arab city to join UNESCO’s Global Network for Age-Friendly Cities in 2017. The goal of the workshop was to support Kuwait in its efforts to become part of this global network.
This initiative is part of SSSD’s ongoing commitment to spread awareness about age-friendly cities and to help other countries adopt global standards in elderly care. The department organized the session to promote cooperation among Arab nations and offer technical and knowledge-based support.
Asmaa Al-Khudari, Director of the Age-Friendly Office, said that Kuwait’s Ministry of Health has shown a strong interest in joining the network. She praised Kuwait’s ongoing efforts to serve the elderly through various programs and projects. She added that the ministry now wants to bring all these efforts under one system that meets international standards.
This was the second workshop held at the request of the Kuwaiti Ministry of Health. The goal was to guide them in applying the age-friendly city standards and to share Sharjah’s successful model.
Al-Khudari also said that these workshops are a part of Sharjah’s mission to spread knowledge and help other Arab cities improve services for older people. She hopes that Kuwait will soon be part of the global list of age-friendly cities, joining other Arab countries with a shared goal of caring for the elderly.
The workshop was attended by officials from the Kuwaiti Ministry of Health, representatives from various government and private organizations, and a group of elderly Kuwaitis. This shows the ministry’s commitment to listening to the elderly and including their opinions while planning future services and policies.
