On Tuesday morning, Sharjah experienced a significant event as His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, unveiled the redeveloped Independence Square. This inauguration coincides with the UAE’s 54th Eid Al Etihad celebrations, marking its national importance.
At the heart of the project is the 34-metre Independence Monument, officially unveiled when His Highness removed the commemorative plaque. This impressive structure, featuring a seven-pointed star symbolizing the seven emirates, stands as a prominent urban landmark celebrating the UAE’s independence journey.
Each side of the monument presents vital historical moments. One plaque commemorates the day, 2 December 1971, when the Rulers united to form the United Arab Emirates following their independence from British rule. Others detail the 151 years of British governance starting from the treaty signed on 8 January 1820. Additional plaques highlight the establishment of the Sharjah Civil Air Station in 1932 and the controversial presence of a British military base.
After the monument unveiling, His Highness inspected the square, which features newly added fountains flanking the monument, redesigned pathways, expanded green spaces, and a modern lighting system that enhances the square's beauty at night.
The redevelopment also improved the neighboring area, refreshing the facades of 24 buildings to reflect Sharjah’s architectural identity. Moreover, 95 commercial signboards were updated to provide a cohesive urban appearance, complemented by new lighting showcasing the area's charm.
Infrastructure enhancements were a key focus, with updates to roads, pavements, and parking facilities to facilitate traffic flow and pedestrian safety. All square lighting columns were also replaced as part of these improvements.
The refurbishment of Independence Square is part of Sharjah’s broader initiative to enhance urban living conditions while preserving cultural heritage.
In addition to the square, His Highness also inaugurated the renovated Imam Al-Nawawi Mosque nearby. First built in 1995 and restored in the Fatimid architectural style, the mosque reopening plaque was unveiled by His Highness, who then conducted prayers inside. Renovations included raising the height of the minarets, adding an external arcade, and modernizing internal facilities to better serve the community.
Sheikh Dr Sultan was joined by senior officials, including Sheikh Fahim bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Humaid Al Qasimi, Sheikh Majid bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Abdulrahman bin Mohammed Al Owais, and other dignitaries.
This inauguration underscores Sharjah’s continuous commitment to thoughtful urban progress and the preservation of national heritage.
