Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday in New York. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the high-level 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Leaders’ Gathering In New York
The informal interaction happened during a gathering of Arab Islamic leaders. The event was hosted by President Trump along with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani. According to Sharif’s office, the Pakistani leader had a brief and informal conversation with Trump after the summit ended.
Pakistani Delegation At The UNGA
Shehbaz Sharif led the Pakistani delegation to the UNGA’s high-level segment. He was joined by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, along with other ministers and senior officials. Reports earlier suggested that Pakistan’s Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, might also join the visit. However, he did not attend the gathering.
US-Pakistan Relations In Focus
Relations between Washington and Islamabad have seen ups and downs in the past years. Recently, ties have become warmer. Pakistan had earlier praised Trump for what it called his role in helping to calm tensions with India during the May conflict. The US President claimed that his pressure on trade and tariffs helped stop the crisis, though India denied this claim.
Pakistan Credits US Role In Peace
At first, Pakistan said that its military officials directly approached India for the ceasefire. Later, Islamabad gave credit to Washington and even nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. This marked an important turn in diplomatic relations.
Army Chief’s Meetings With Trump
In June, Trump welcomed Pakistan’s Army Chief, Asim Munir, at the White House. They discussed trade, economic growth, and even cryptocurrency. Soon after, the Trump administration announced a new trade deal with Pakistan and promised to help the country develop its large oil reserves.
New US Investment In Pakistan
Army Chief Munir returned to Washington in August. Following his visit, Pakistan received a $500 million investment from the United States. This investment will support Pakistan’s critical minerals sector, which is seen as an area of huge potential for future growth.
