Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has renewed calls to make sexual harassment a criminal offence nationwide after being assaulted on the streets of Mexico City, drawing fresh attention to women's safety in the country.
The 63-year-old leader was greeting supporters near the presidential palace when a man, reportedly intoxicated, put an arm around her, groped her hip and chest and attempted to kiss her neck. Presidential security immediately restrained the attacker, who was arrested and later charged with harassment.
"This person approached, completely intoxicated… it wasn't until I saw the videos later that I realized what had really happened," Sheinbaum said at a Wednesday press briefing, stressing the episode underlines the need to reassess national harassment laws.
At present, Mexico City and roughly 20 states classify sexual harassment as a punishable crime, while not all 32 states have similar statutes. Sheinbaum asked, "If this happens to the president, what will happen to all the women in our country?"
The incident highlights Mexico's broader crisis of violence against women. United Nations data indicate about 70% of Mexican women aged 15 and older have experienced sexual harassment, and an average of 10 women are killed each day. Feminist groups said the attack symbolises the everyday risks many women face.
Sheinbaum, who has reported similar harassment in her youth, confirmed she filed a complaint and pledged to advocate for stronger protections nationwide. Human rights organisations welcomed the move and urged harmonising laws so harassment is a criminal offence across all states.
Security analysts warned the president's hands-on engagement with the public leaves her exposed, especially given the presence of cartel-related violence. Despite those concerns, Sheinbaum has ruled out increasing her security detail, saying, "We need to be close to the people."
The episode has reignited debate across Mexico about gender-based violence, legal reform and measures to improve public safety for women.
