Sherrone Moore Dismissed Following Arrest in Assault Investigation

Post by : Meena Hassan

Sherrone Moore, former head coach of the Michigan Wolverines, was arrested later on Wednesday after being relieved of his coaching duties. This follows a police investigation into an alleged assault.

Pittsfield Township Police confirmed they received a report of an assault and dispatched officers Wednesday afternoon. The department indicated that the situation seemed targeted and did not pose a general threat to the public. Moore was detained and booked at the Washtenaw County Jail while prosecutors evaluate possible charges. Authorities are withholding further details to uphold the case's integrity.

Prior to his arrest by township police, Moore was briefly held by the Saline Police Department, located to the west.

Earlier in the day, the University of Michigan announced Moore's firing, citing findings from an internal investigation that revealed “credible evidence” of an inappropriate relationship between the head coach and a staff member. Athletic Director Warde Manuel reinforced the institution’s strict policy against such behavior.

Following this development, Biff Poggi has been appointed as the interim head coach.

Moore’s departure concludes a challenging season for the Wolverines, who finished with a 9–3 record, including a two-game suspension over a sign-stealing controversy. They ended the regular season ranked No. 18 in the College Football Playoff standings and will face No. 13 Texas on December 31 in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl in Orlando.

The 39-year-old coach has a record of 16–8 during his time at the program, having taken over for Jim Harbaugh, who departed Michigan for the NFL's Los Angeles Chargers after leading the team to a national championship run in 2023.
