Tragic Shooting at Kentucky State University Claims One Life

Post by : Meena Hassan

A tragic shooting at Kentucky State University in Frankfort, Kentucky, has claimed the life of one student, while another remains in critical condition just days ahead of winter break.

Authorities apprehended the suspect, a 48-year-old Indiana resident not affiliated with the university, charging him with first-degree murder and assault. He is currently held at Franklin County Regional Jail.

The injured student is reported to be stable, and officials assert that the incident was not a targeted attack.

Due to the shooting, all classes, exams, and activities on campus have been suspended for the week as students are permitted to return home, with additional guidance to be provided by the university.

Campus police acted quickly, arresting the suspect shortly after the first gunshots were fired. Local law enforcement confirmed that the area was secured rapidly, eliminating any ongoing threat.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear characterized the incident as an isolated act of violence at the historically Black institution, situated approximately 25 miles northwest of Lexington.

This tragic event marks the 73rd school shooting in the U.S. this year, according to national statistics. Kentucky State University, founded in 1886, has a student body of over 2,200 and around 450 faculty members.

The shooting took place around 3:10 p.m. near the Whitney M. Young Jr. residence hall. The names of the victims have not been disclosed for privacy reasons, and the university is providing counseling and support services to affected students and staff.

University President Koffi C. Akakpo referred to the shooting as a “senseless tragedy” and called for prayers for the impacted students and families.

The swift and coordinated response from campus security, local authorities, and federal agencies has been commended, effectively preventing further injuries.

This incident adds to a worrying trend of violence at historically Black colleges and universities, including other events earlier this year at Howard University and Lincoln University.
