India cricketer Shreyas Iyer has confirmed he is making steady progress after suffering a spleen injury during the third One Day International against Australia in Sydney. The 30-year-old, who is India’s limited-overs vice-captain, was hurt while attempting a fielding effort.
The incident occurred when Iyer dived to take a catch off Alex Carey. Although he completed the catch, he landed heavily on his abdomen and appeared to be in significant pain. Play was stopped as medical staff attended to him before he was removed from the field and transported to hospital.
Following medical checks, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reported that Iyer had a lacerated spleen with internal bleeding. Officials described his condition as serious but stable, noting that he will need careful monitoring and rest as part of his recovery plan.
In a social media update a few days after the injury, Iyer thanked supporters for their messages and said he was improving with each day. "I’m currently in the recovery process and getting better every passing day," he wrote, expressing appreciation for the support from fans and teammates.
India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav described the injury as an unusual occurrence and offered encouragement, calling it a rare incident affecting a rare talent and expressing confidence in Iyer’s recovery. Other teammates have similarly voiced support and optimism.
As a result of the injury, Iyer has been ruled out of India’s ongoing T20 series against Australia. The second match of the five-game series will be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, while the opener in Canberra was abandoned because of rain. Team management has emphasized that Iyer’s health is the priority.
Over recent seasons, Iyer has established himself as a dependable middle-order batsman, noted for his composure and technique. His vice-captaincy adds leadership depth to the side, making his absence a notable loss amid a busy international schedule.
Team medical staff have pointed out that spleen injuries are uncommon in cricket and typically result from significant impact. The squad’s physiotherapists are coordinating with specialists to ensure a comprehensive and safe recovery path.
Updates indicate Iyer is responding to treatment and remains under medical supervision. He is expected to begin light training only after receiving clearance from team doctors, with no rush to return to full play.
Support for Iyer has poured in on social media, with fans and the cricket community offering messages of encouragement and wishing him a prompt recovery. The team and supporters remain hopeful he will make a full return.
