Shreyas Iyer Faces Doubt for India’s ODIs Against South Africa

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The Indian cricket squad may be without Shreyas Iyer for the impending One Day International (ODI) series against South Africa. The skilled batter from Mumbai, who was instrumental in India's Champions Trophy 2025 efforts, is still on the mend from an internal injury incurred during the third ODI against Australia. Sources close to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) mention that the management is prioritizing a careful recovery approach for him.

The injury happened on October 25 when Iyer, attempting a full-length dive to catch Australian batter Alex Carey off the delivery by Harshit Rana, landed awkwardly on his left side, grasping his ribs in pain. Initially thought to be a minor issue, scans later uncovered a laceration to his spleen coupled with internal bleeding, highlighting the injury's seriousness.

After the incident, India's team physio Kamlesh Jain quickly tended to him, and he was subsequently taken to a local hospital for further examination. Medical staff discovered internal trauma in his abdomen, particularly affecting his spleen. For precautionary reasons, Iyer was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for several days. Thankfully, he improved steadily and was released from the hospital to continue his recovery under medical observation.

As noted by The Indian Express, the BCCI and selectors are being prudent regarding Iyer’s re-entry into the game. According to sources, while he is recovering, he is not yet match fit for the energy-demanding ODI series against South Africa, starting on November 30. “He requires additional time to be fully match fit, and the board along with the selection committee won’t be hasty in this matter,” the source confirmed.

Recognized as one of India’s key middle-order batsmen in ODIs, Iyer’s ability to stabilize innings under stress has been vital for the team's success in recent competitions. As a standout performer in this year's Champions Trophy, his consistent scoring in crucial matches made him indispensable. His absence from the South Africa series may significantly impact the batting order.

The ODI series between India and South Africa will kick off on November 30, with matches slated in Ranchi, Raipur, and Visakhapatnam. In Iyer's absence, selectors may consider alternatives like Rajat Patidar, Tilak Varma, or Rinku Singh to step into the middle-order role. This series is crucial for India as they prepare for upcoming international commitments, and the management aims to sustain team momentum without Iyer.

Sources have indicated that the medical team is focused on ensuring Iyer’s return only when he is completely fit, given the sensitivity of the spleen injury which could have long-lasting effects if not handled properly. Doctors have advised him against strenuous activities for the forthcoming weeks. Known for his dedication and discipline, Iyer is currently partaking in light fitness and physiotherapy sessions to gradually regain complete fitness.

Support for Iyer has poured in from teammates and fans alike on social media, wishing him a swift recovery. The Indian cricket community acknowledges his role in maintaining the team's balance and stability. With significant tournaments and tours on the horizon for 2026, including the Asia Cup and World Test Championship matches, it’s crucial for Iyer to recover fully in preparation for future challenges.

Presently, Shreyas Iyer’s availability for the South Africa ODI series appears unlikely. The selection committee is set to make a definitive decision as the series start approaches, based on his medical progress. For the time being, the emphasis remains on Iyer’s health and long-term career sustainability. While his absence could be felt initially, prioritizing a full recovery ultimately serves both the player and Indian cricket well.
