The Indian cricket team will compete in the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati without their key opener and regular captain, Shubman Gill. The 26-year-old suffered a neck injury during the initial Test in Kolkata while batting on Day 2. He retired hurt following a sweep shot for four and was subsequently taken for scans in Kolkata. Though he was discharged the next day and traveled with the squad, he hasn’t recovered enough to participate in the Guwahati Test.
With Gill unavailable, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been appointed captain. Pant, known for his dynamic batting style and leadership, will guide the team during this crucial must-win match. Left-handed batter Sai Sudharsan is likely to step in for Gill, enhancing the batting lineup. Sudharsan, who made his Test debut in England last June, has played five Tests and accumulated 273 runs at an average of 30.33. The team's management believes Sudharsan possesses the temperament necessary for this high-stakes game.
The BCCI has reported that Gill is responding positively to treatment and undergoing rehabilitation. However, given the demands of a five-day match, it would be too risky for him to participate. Recovery is anticipated to take another week to ten days, casting doubt on his involvement in the upcoming ODI series starting November 30 in Ranchi. While he may return for the T20 series, the team is taking a cautious approach to prevent any further injury.
The Indian squad, which includes Sudharsan, Dhruv Jurel, Akash Deep, Ravindra Jadeja, and Devdutt Padikkal, took part in an optional practice session at Eden Gardens before heading to Assam. Nitish Kumar Reddy has also been included in the squad for preparation on the red-soil Guwahati pitch, known for its turn and bounce.
This second Test in Guwahati is historic as it marks the first Test match at this venue. Scheduled to start at 9 a.m. daily, the tea break will be taken prior to lunch, a first in the history of Test cricket. Trailing 0-1 in the series, Pant’s leadership and the performance of the team without Gill are pivotal for leveling the series. Fans and cricket analysts will be eagerly watching how the emerging players rise to the occasion in this critical match.
