Shubman Gill Expected Back for South Africa T20I Series Soon

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Shubman Gill is showing steady improvement in his fitness and is likely to return to the Indian team soon. His comeback may happen during the five-match T20I series against South Africa, which begins on December 9. Gill has been recovering at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru after suffering neck spasms during the Eden Test, and his progress over the last few days has been encouraging.

The India Test and ODI captain, who has been out of action since Day 2 of that Test match, has reportedly impressed the CoE trainers and medical staff with his recovery. According to sources, he is very close to being declared fully fit. Over the last several training sessions, Gill has batted for long periods without facing discomfort or pain, which is a major step forward in his rehab routine.

The selectors are closely monitoring his condition because they want to be confident not only about his batting but also about his ability to field. Fielding often involves sudden movements, diving, and high-intensity activity, so clearing that part of the fitness test is important. Early indications suggest that Gill has managed to pass both requirements successfully, giving strong hope for his availability.

Although the official squad for the South Africa T20I series has not been announced yet, Gill is expected to be included. With next year’s World Cup approaching, his role as the team’s vice-captain makes his presence even more valuable. The selectors are aware of how important it is for him to get game time before major international events. Therefore, if cleared, he is almost certain to feature in the series.

Reports suggest that the squad announcement may come within the next two days. Once his selection is confirmed, Gill is expected to join the Indian team in Bhubaneswar on December 7. Even if he does not recover in time for the first match in Cuttack on December 9, he is likely to be available for the remaining matches of the series.

The rest of the T20I games are scheduled for December 11 in New Chandigarh, December 14 in Dharamsala, December 17 in Lucknow, and December 19 in Ahmedabad. These matches will give Gill multiple chances to return to competitive cricket and regain his rhythm before future important assignments.

Gill’s expected return is great news for fans and the Indian team management. His strong batting technique, ability to handle pressure, and steadily growing leadership skills make him an essential member of the squad. His recovery also shows how important the CoE has become in helping players return safely and strongly after injuries.

As India prepares for a challenging T20I series against a powerful South African side, the availability of Gill will give the team more depth and confidence at the top of the order. If he continues to progress at the same pace, fans can expect to see him back on the field very soon, ready to contribute with both his batting and leadership.
