Singapore Dismisses Negotiations with Iran Over Hormuz Passage

Post by : Shakul

Singapore has firmly stated its refusal to engage in talks with Iran regarding the safe passage and tolling through the Strait of Hormuz. In a recent Parliament session, Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan highlighted that transit through this strait is a basic right for all nations, not a privilege governed by neighboring countries.

He reiterated that international statutes, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), affirm the right to unimpeded transit. Article 44 of this convention mandates that nations adjacent to critical maritime passages must not hinder or impede ship movements.

Balakrishnan emphasized that Singapore’s stance aligns with its established policy regarding international navigation. He drew parallels between the Strait of Hormuz and other essential global waterways, such as the Straits of Malacca and Singapore, underscoring their collective significance for international trade and maritime safety.

The minister further stated that Singapore is consistently monitoring regional developments. Authorities, including the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, are actively collaborating with ship owners and global partners to promote safe and uninterrupted passage through the Persian Gulf.
