Singapore has made a strong appeal to North Korea, urging it to participate in regional diplomatic discussions and to keep communication channels open as tensions escalate across Asia. This call was expressed by Singapore's Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan during his recent visit to North Korea.
Balakrishnan met North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui in Pyongyang on May 26 as part of his diplomatic mission in North-east Asia, which also includes engagements with China and South Korea. The discussions allowed both ministers to share insights on security issues and international matters impacting the Asia-Pacific region.
As highlighted by Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Balakrishnan encouraged North Korea to take an active role in the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), an important platform for dialogue related to diplomacy and security in the Asia-Pacific, where North Korea has been a participant since 2000.
In his public remarks post-meeting, Balakrishnan described their talks as open and productive. He stressed the importance of dialogue and cooperation amidst the rising uncertainty and instability within the region.
The two ministers reiterated the long-standing diplomatic ties between Singapore and North Korea, which will mark 50 years in 2025. Officials from Singapore regard this relationship as cordial and based on mutual respect and consistent diplomatic engagement over the years.
During his visit, Balakrishnan was treated to an official banquet and also met Jo Yong Won, chairman of North Korea’s Supreme People’s Assembly. Both sides reflected on the historic visit of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to Singapore during the 2018 summit with then US President Donald Trump.
This diplomatic initiative comes amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula following recent North Korean missile tests, which have raised international security alarms. Regional governments are closely monitoring ongoing developments in the context of North Korea's weapons program.
Balakrishnan's engagement with North Korea followed discussions in Beijing with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, where they addressed tensions in the Middle East and the importance of ensuring stability and safeguarding international trade routes, including the Strait of Hormuz.
Analysts suggest that Singapore’s outreach signifies a broader regional commitment to maintaining diplomatic relations with Pyongyang, despite the escalating geopolitical uncertainties. They believe that sustaining dialogue platforms, such as the ASEAN Regional Forum, can help to minimize misunderstandings and foster long-term regional stability.
