Earlier that day, Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime notched his first tournament victory by defeating American Ben Shelton, bouncing back after losing the first set to win 4-6, 7-6, 7-5. This outcome eliminated Shelton from the tournament after previously losing to Zverev.
Shelton started strongly, taking the first set with precision serves. However, Auger-Aliassime displayed remarkable composure in the second set, leading to a tiebreak win that leveled the match. Though Shelton suffered a knee injury during the tiebreak, he persevered despite the odds, but ended up allowing Auger-Aliassime to claim the second set due to a double fault.
In the deciding set, both players played strong service games until 6-5, when Shelton's unforced errors handed Auger-Aliassime crucial match points. The Canadian capitalized on his third opportunity. Shelton’s frustration was evident as he had previously thrown his racket in frustration after a service game mishap in the first set.
