Sister Sabina Triumphs in Hurdle Race Ahead of Teaching Retirement

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

During a recent athletics event in Kerala, spectators were amazed as Sister Sabina, adorned in her religious attire and barefoot, poised at the starting line. In mere moments, the former national athlete and physical education teacher burst forth with incredible speed and agility. She soared past each hurdle and clinched victory in the 55-plus category at the State Masters Athletics meet, demonstrating that passion and determination transcend age and attire.

A beacon of inspiration, Sister Sabina, from Ennappara in Kasaragod, has always cherished sports. She unearthed her athletic talents during her school years, especially excelling in hurdle competitions, eventually representing her school in major national events by the time she reached Class 9. Her unwavering dedication distinguished her as a bright young athlete.

Her journey continued as she competed at the university level, performing impressively across several inter-university meets. However, her path shifted towards a life devoted to service and spirituality.

In 1993, Sister Sabina began a new chapter in Wayanad, merging her passion for athletics with her educational commitments. As a physical education teacher, she motivated countless students to embrace sports and an active lifestyle, earning their respect for her skill, humility, and inspiring outlook.

Though no longer a competitive athlete, she remained connected to the sport, continuously training and encouraging her pupils to pursue their aspirations, often sharing her own athletic experiences.

The recent State Masters Athletics meet held special significance for Sister Sabina, who chose to participate in the 55-plus category to revisit her athletic past before concluding her teaching career. Standing barefoot and dressed in her habit, she exemplified that true passion knows no boundaries.

When the race began, she showcased the rhythm and finesse that had defined her past victories. The once-quiet crowd erupted in applause as she expertly navigated each hurdle. Crossing the finish line first earned her a standing ovation, transforming her victory into a celebration of perseverance and a deep-seated love for sports.

After her triumph, Sister Sabina shared that this race would mark her farewell to competitive sports before retiring from teaching. Reflecting on her journey, she remarked, “Next March, I will retire from my role as a physical education teacher. Competing one last time at the State Masters meet was important to me.” Her words encapsulated her enduring connection to athletics and the desire to conclude her sporting chapter meaningfully.

Her remarkable achievement quickly gained traction on social media, with many celebrating her spirit and commitment. Sister Sabina has emerged as a symbol of how age and profession don't hinder pursuing one's passions, inspiring athletes of all ages nationwide to chase their dreams relentlessly.

For her students and peers, Sister Sabina’s achievement resonates far beyond mere accolades. It serves as a motivating reminder that resilience and belief can surmount any barriers. Her extraordinary balance of spiritual life and sporting commitment resonates powerfully, exemplifying that real success comes from pursuing what you love wholeheartedly.

As she transitions into retirement, Sister Sabina leaves a lasting legacy that extends beyond the track. Her life embodies humility, faith, and excellence—principles she imparted to each student she mentored. Her latest victory fittingly concludes a journey defined by discipline and commitment, a moment that will be etched in Kerala's sports history for years to come.
