In a pivotal moment for ethical discourse, Slovenia has firmly rejected a proposed law permitting terminally ill adults to end their lives. Preliminary results indicate that 53% of voters opposed the legislation, delaying its possible implementation for at least a year.
The referendum took place on Sunday, recording a turnout of 40.9% among the 1.7 million eligible voters, meeting the necessary legal threshold. This vote follows Slovenia’s parliament’s approval of the law in July, with expectations of public support leading up to the referendum slated for 2024.
The legislation sought to provide terminally ill patients with the right to assisted dying under circumstances of unbearable suffering and no viable treatment options. Notably, the proposal excluded cases related purely to mental illness.
Organized by the civil group Voice for the Children and the Family, the campaign against the law garnered backing from the Catholic Church and conservative lawmakers, amassing over 40,000 signatures to initiate the repeat voting. Ales Primc, the group’s leader, hailed the outcome as a victory for “solidarity and justice,” emphasizing a commitment to the “culture of life.”
Prime Minister Robert Golob had advocated for the law, highlighting the dignity of individuals and the importance of personal choice regarding end-of-life decisions. Conversely, detractors, primarily from the Catholic Church, contended that assisted dying is incompatible with core religious and moral beliefs.
This referendum positions Slovenia alongside nations such as Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Switzerland, where assisted dying is permissible under strict conditions. However, in many European countries, the practice remains unlawful even for terminally ill individuals suffering greatly.
The outcome reflects a complex interplay of personal choice, ethical dilemmas, and communal values, prompting Slovenia to reassess its approach to end-of-life care amid a broader global dialogue on assisted dying.
