Ahead of International Women’s Day on March 8, toy maker Mattel has announced its first-ever Barbie Dream Team, honoring women who are breaking barriers and inspiring young girls around the world. Among the global icons selected for this special recognition is Indian cricket star Smriti Mandhana.
Mandhana, the vice-captain of the India women's national cricket team, joins a group of accomplished women from different fields. The list includes tennis legend Serena Williams, space researcher Kellie Gerardi, Mexican racing driver Regina Sirvent Alvarado, and England footballer Chloe Kelly. The initiative also features representatives from several countries, including Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Poland, and Australia.
The Barbie Dream Team campaign aims to highlight the achievements of women who have made a strong impact in their fields. Through this initiative, Mattel hopes to inspire young girls to pursue their dreams and believe in their potential, regardless of the profession they choose.
Reacting to the recognition, Smriti Mandhana shared her excitement on social media and called it a proud moment. She said having a Barbie doll inspired by her journey was something she had never imagined while growing up. Mandhana also added that if her story motivates even one girl to take up cricket, it would mean a lot to her.
Photos and videos posted by the cricketer show her unboxing the Barbie doll modeled after her. The figurine is dressed in sporty Barbie-themed athletic gear, reflecting Mandhana’s cricketing journey.
Mandhana has recently shown strong resilience both on and off the field. After going through a difficult personal phase last year, she returned to focus on cricket and continued her training. Her determination paid off earlier this year when she led Royal Challengers Bangalore Women to their second Women's Premier League title in four years. The team chased a record target of 204 runs to defeat Delhi Capitals Women, with Mandhana playing a crucial role with a composed half-century.
The achievement highlighted her leadership and focus during a challenging time. Mandhana has often said that cricket gives her purpose and motivation, adding that wearing the Indian jersey helps her stay focused despite personal challenges.
With the Barbie Dream Team recognition, Mandhana joins a global group of women celebrated for their achievements and influence. Mattel said the initiative aims to honor women who are paving the way for future generations through their remarkable accomplishments and inspiring journeys.
