South Africa Clinches Historic Victory Against India at Eden Gardens

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

In a remarkable Test match at Eden Gardens, South Africa stunned India, marking their first victory in the country in 15 years. The match turned dramatically after South Africa entered the final day needing to defend a small total of 124 runs, which proved dauntingly challenging on a pitch notorious for its unpredictable bounce. As the home crowd watched in disbelief, India collapsed to 93 all out.

Temba Bavuma emerged as the standout player, scoring the only half-century of the match and guiding South Africa to a pivotal lead. His composed batting was instrumental in taking the visitors to a critical 123-run advantage, forcing India into errors as the conditions worsened. Despite the pressure from India’s bowlers, Bavuma's strategic play became a defining moment in the match.

While the target of 124 may have seemed manageable on paper, the pitch made it extremely challenging. Simon Harmer, having previously struggled in India, delivered a masterclass, outshining the Indian spinners. Marco Jansen compounded India's woes with his unpredictable bounce, putting the South African bowlers in a winning position.

Starting the day with optimism, India’s strategy quickly fell apart, raising eyebrows over captain Rishabh Pant's decisions. Oddly, Axar Patel opened the bowling, resulting in lost control as South Africa capitalized on easy runs. Pant's frequent bowling changes added to the confusion, while Ravindra Jadeja's effectiveness waned, and Washington Sundar remained unused during crucial moments.

Bavuma’s partnership with Corbin Bosch added essential runs, with Bosch contributing aggressively. Jasprit Bumrah’s dismissal of Bosch briefly sparked hope for India, but it would be short-lived.

South Africa struck early in India's chase, with Jansen dismissing the first two Indian batsmen in quick succession, setting a tone of pressure. Washington Sundar also struggled to find his footing and, despite his determined start, Dhruv Jurel's dismissal indicated the difficulties ahead.

Harmer’s performance heightened India’s challenges as he expertly varied his bowling, ultimately dismissing Rishabh Pant with a spectacular return catch. At 38 for 4, India’s run chase began to slip away, and Jadeja’s LBW dismissal marked a downturn in their fortunes.

Aiden Markram’s removal of Washington added to India’s woes, and soon they found themselves at 77 for 7, desperately needing a miracle. Although Axar Patel attempted to ignite a fightback, Bavuma’s exceptional catch sealed India’s fate, leading to South Africa's historic victory.

The triumph was especially sweet for Kagiso Rabada, who, despite missing the match due to injury, celebrated this rare achievement in a country where losses have been common.
