South Africa Secure Series Win With Strong Victory Over Ireland

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

South Africa claimed a comfortable win over Ireland in the second T20I in Paarl, securing a 65-run victory and taking a 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Batting first, South Africa posted a strong total of 201 for 5 in 20 overs. Ireland, despite a steady effort from their middle order, could only reach 136 for 3 in their chase.

Dane Van Niekerk, playing in her comeback match, delivered an explosive late knock, scoring 41 from just 19 balls. Her innings included three fours and three sixes, lifting South Africa’s scoring rate above ten runs per over. Chloe Tryon added a quick unbeaten 16 off seven balls, helping the team cross the 200-run mark. With this innings, Tryon also broke the record for the most sixes by a South African woman in T20Is.

Earlier in the innings, Faye Tunnicliffe played an important role at the top. She scored her maiden T20I half-century, reaching 50 from 40 balls. Her 78-run opening partnership with Sune Luus provided the base for South Africa’s big total. Aimee Maguire was the standout bowler for Ireland, taking 3 for 43, including the wickets of Tunnicliffe, Luus, and captain Laura Wolvaardt.

Ireland’s chase never gained momentum. They managed only 33 runs in the powerplay despite not losing any wickets early on. Chloe Tryon dismissed both openers, Amy Hunter and Gaby Lewis, leaving Ireland at 35 for 2. Their scoring remained slow throughout the innings.

Orla Prendergast and Leah Paul offered resistance with a solid 76-run partnership for the third wicket. Paul made 40 off 29 balls before getting out, while Prendergast stayed unbeaten on 51 from 43 balls, reaching her half-century in the final over. But by that stage, the match result was already decided, giving South Africa a dominant win and the T20I series victory.
