In an emphatic display, South Africa secured an eight-wicket victory against Pakistan in the second Test held in Rawalpindi. The visitors successfully chased down a modest target of 68 runs before the lunch break, leveling the two-match series at 1-1. Pakistan, beginning the day with a score of 94-4, collapsed spectacularly to 138 all out, setting up an attainable target for South Africa.
The morning session saw Pakistan lose six wickets for a mere 44 runs, shattering their aspirations for a sizable lead. Despite starting the day with some hope, the team's lower order faced relentless pressure and crumbled, resulting in their dismissal in less than an hour.
Simon Harmer was the standout performer for South Africa, achieving six wickets for 50 runs, while Keshav Maharaj supported him with two more. Together, they took 17 out of the 20 Pakistani wickets across both innings. Notably, Harmer marked his first-ever five-wicket haul in Test cricket and reached the significant milestone of 1,000 first-class wickets in his career.
Pakistan's captain Babar Azam resumed play on 49 and notched up a half-century early but was soon out leg before wicket to Harmer, which sparked the final collapse of the team. Babar, despite his early promise, has now gone 15 Test matches without a century, raising concerns regarding one of Pakistan's key players' form.
Chasing a mere 68 runs, South Africa completed the job in just 12.3 overs. The captain, Aiden Markram, led the innings with 42 runs before losing his wicket to Noman Ali, while Tristan Stubbs followed suit not long after. Ryan Rickelton (25 not out) along with Tony de Zorzi ensured a comfortable win, sealing the match well before the lunch break.
Markram expressed immense pride in his team’s performance, commending their resilience and teamwork. “There were pivotal moments when players stepped up for the team,” he remarked. “It required confidence and belief to recover after our loss in Lahore. Winning in this fashion, especially when challenged, holds significant value.”
In contrast, Pakistan's captain Shan Masood acknowledged the need for improvement in several areas. “We have many issues to address—most notably the lower-order batting and ensuring consistency throughout the innings,” he stated. “We had an opportunity to establish a large first-innings total but couldn’t take advantage.”
This win marks South Africa's 11 victories in their last 12 Tests, the sole defeat being in the opening match of this series. The team’s recent performance indicates a notable resurgence in red-ball cricket, characterized by disciplined bowling and enhanced batting. Their success in Pakistan elevates their status as one of the premier Test teams globally.
Pakistan, on the other hand, continues to grapple with batting collapses, consistently struggling despite home advantage and a roster of seasoned players. The inability of the middle and lower order to stabilize innings remains a major challenge as they gear up for future international competitions.
As the series concludes in a tie, both teams will turn their eyes to upcoming challenges. South Africa aims to enhance their consistency in away matches, while Pakistan needs to scrutinize their batting order and strategic approaches. The two-match series demonstrated competitive play but ultimately underscored South Africa's superior management under intense conditions.
