London Southend Airport has been closed indefinitely following a serious plane crash on Sunday afternoon. The aircraft involved burst into flames on impact, leading to a large emergency response and cancellation of all scheduled flights.
Authorities have not yet confirmed how many people were injured or killed in the crash, but Essex Police described the incident as “serious” and said their teams remain at the scene.
Fireball Witnessed After Plane Crash
The crash occurred shortly before 4:00 PM, and dramatic photos and videos posted on social media showed a huge fireball and thick black smoke rising from the site of the crash.
Witnesses said they saw the aircraft engulfed in flames shortly after it collided with the ground. Police quickly secured the area with a wide safety cordon to keep people away from the danger zone.
Aircraft Operated by Dutch-Based Zeusch Aviation
The plane involved in the crash belonged to Zeusch Aviation, a company based at Lelystad Airport in the Netherlands. The aircraft had completed flights earlier in the day from Athens, Greece, to Pula, Croatia, before heading to London Southend Airport, where the crash occurred.
Zeusch Aviation released an official statement saying:
“Our SUZ1 flight was involved in an accident at Southend Airport. We are actively supporting authorities with the investigation. Our thoughts are with everyone affected.”
Flights Suspended Until Further Notice
Southend Airport released a public statement on Sunday evening confirming the immediate closure of the airport. All upcoming flights have been canceled, and no new operations will take place until the situation is resolved.
“Our thoughts are with those affected by today’s events and all passengers impacted by this disruption,” the airport stated.
“We will restart flight operations as soon as possible and will continue to update the public.”
Passengers who were scheduled to travel on Monday are being urged to contact their airlines directly for further information and rebooking.
Investigation Underway by Air Accident Authorities
Essex Police remain on the scene, coordinating with emergency services and aviation authorities to determine the cause of the accident. The Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) has joined the inquiry and will lead the technical investigation into what went wrong.
To help manage information and public concern, police have also launched a dedicated online portal and phone line for anyone with relevant information or questions about the incident.
Police Request Public Cooperation
Chief Superintendent Morgan Cronin of Essex Police shared a statement encouraging the public to remain calm and cooperate with investigators:
“In these very early stages, it is vital we gather the information we need and continue supporting the people of Essex.
Please help us keep emergency lines open by using our dedicated channels if you’re contacting us about this incident.”
He added that Essex Police are working closely with airport authorities, aviation investigators, and emergency responders to fully understand what happened and prevent further harm.
Public Reaction and Passenger Disruption
The news of the crash has shocked many travelers, aviation watchers, and local residents. Social media has been flooded with messages from people who witnessed the incident or had loved ones at the airport at the time.
Passengers who were set to fly on Sunday or Monday are now left stranded or delayed, with limited information on when normal service will resume.
The crash has also raised concerns about aviation safety and airport preparedness, particularly at smaller regional airports.
A Moment of Reflection for Safety in Aviation
Though the aviation industry has seen significant advancements in safety, accidents like this remind us of the risks still involved in air travel. For now, investigators will focus on determining what caused the crash, whether it was a technical failure, weather-related, or human error.
As of now, there is no confirmed information about casualties, and updates from authorities are expected in the coming days.
Airport and Airline Cooperation Will Be Key
Reopening the airport and resuming flights safely will require cooperation between airport staff, airline operators, and government regulators. Zeusch Aviation’s promise to assist with the investigation shows early steps toward accountability and transparency.
Meanwhile, passenger safety and communication remain top priorities for the airport.
What Happens Next
AAIB will release a preliminary report once key findings are available.
Essex Police will continue supporting families and collecting witness statements.
Southend Airport will only reopen once safety protocols are re-evaluated and approved.
The public is advised to stay tuned to official channels for updates and avoid spreading rumors or unconfirmed information.
