The anticipated press briefing by Venezuelan opposition figure and Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado was unexpectedly canceled on Tuesday, leading to increased speculation just a day before her scheduled honor in Oslo.
Machado, who has remained out of the public eye for nearly 11 months, was supposed to deliver remarks at a customary pre-ceremony gathering at noon. However, the event was delayed without notice, and the Norwegian Nobel Institute later confirmed that it would not proceed as planned.
In a message sent three hours after the initially planned start, the institute mentioned that Machado had earlier acknowledged the “challenging” journey involved in reaching Norway. Furthermore, it stated that no new information was available regarding her arrival for the Wednesday award ceremony. There was no indication that the news conference would be rescheduled.
As her spokesperson did not respond promptly to inquiries, speculation regarding her location grew. Machado, 58, has been largely unseen since early January, when she made a brief appearance at a protest in Caracas before being detained and then going into hiding.
Her Nobel recognition, announced on October 10, acknowledged her efforts in advocating for a democratic transition in Venezuela. She had emerged victorious in the opposition's primary last year, aiming to challenge President Nicolás Maduro in the 2024 elections. Yet, her run was obstructed by the government, resulting in retired diplomat Edmundo González taking her place.
The months leading to the July 28 vote were marred by detentions, political restrictions, and severe allegations of human rights violations. After the electoral council, dominated by Maduro supporters, declared him the victor despite evidence to the contrary, pressure mounted on opposition leaders. González later sought asylum in Spain following a court-issued arrest warrant against him.
Meanwhile, Machado has kept a low profile and has been absent from public view since January 9. Her unexpected absence from the planned Oslo briefing has intensified the uncertainty regarding her attendance at one of the global spotlight's most significant events.
