In a significant diplomatic initiative, Russian President Vladimir Putin convened with US negotiators in Moscow for more than five hours on Tuesday, striving to advance a peace framework for Ukraine. Despite a focused session that included Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner, the discussions ended without reaching a consensus.
A representative from the Kremlin characterized the discussions as "constructive," yet underscored that pivotal aspects of the proposed plan remain unsatisfactory to Russia. Earlier, Putin had cautioned that any escalatory actions from Europe could provoke immediate Russian retaliation.
Kyiv, along with its European partners, has been urging the US to amend a draft peace proposal that was initially perceived as skewed in favor of Russia following a November leak. The recent amendments aimed at responding to Ukraine's territorial and security needs have not attained Russia's full endorsement.
Yuri Ushakov, an aide to Putin, affirmed that while Moscow consented to certain points, significant disagreements remain. A key issue is Ukraine's demand for continued control over eastern regions and the requests for robust European security guarantees, including NATO membership—a non-negotiable for Russia.
Simultaneously, clashes continue on the battlefield. Ukrainian forces reported ongoing confrontations in Pokrovsk, countering Russian assertions of dominance. Disputes have also surfaced around areas like Vovchansk and Kupyans, exposing the contrast between combat realities and official statements.
President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted the critical nature of the situation, declaring that concluding the conflict "now more than ever" necessitates careful negotiation. Ukrainian officials have engaged in numerous discussions with US representatives, while European leaders are formulating their own alternative proposals.
As diplomatic negotiations falter, the war's humanitarian crisis remains severe. Since the start of the invasion in 2022, tens of thousands of soldiers and more than 14,000 civilians have either died or suffered injuries. Civilian structures, including educational institutes and hospitals, continue to be targeted in nightly offensives.
These negotiations highlight the complexities of the conflict: territorial claims, security guarantees, and international expectations remain fraught with contention. While both parties express willingness to negotiate, the journey toward a sustainable ceasefire remains uncertain.
