Holographic Stan Lee Wows Fans at L.A. Comic Con

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

The late Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee made a new kind of comeback at L.A. Comic Con this week, not in person, but through a lifelike AI-powered hologram. Fans of Spider-Man, Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, and other beloved superheroes had a chance to meet the digital version of Lee in an enclosed booth at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

The hologram, dressed in a green sweater and tan pants, was created to bring Lee’s energy and personality back to fans. Though Lee passed away in 2018 at the age of 95, technology has made it possible for his character and words to interact with a new generation of Marvel fans. Visitors could ask the holographic Lee questions and even take selfies, creating a memorable experience reminiscent of meeting the real Stan Lee at conventions.

Chris DeMoulin, CEO of Comikaze Entertainment, which runs L.A. Comic Con, explained that the hologram was designed to extend Lee’s legacy. “It was obviously sad for many of us when Stan passed,” he said. “For the last couple of years, we’ve been talking about things we might be able to do to help extend Stan’s legacy. This hologram serves as an entry point for fans, old and new, into the Marvel universe.”

The project is a collaboration between Proto Hologram, which has previously used holographic technology for films like The Conjuring and A Minecraft Movie, and Hyperreal, an AI company specializing in creating realistic digital humans. The AI hologram was trained using hours of footage of Lee on red carpets, fan conventions, and cameo appearances in Marvel films.

George Johnson of Mammoth Vision, another company involved in the project, explained that strict measures were used to ensure the hologram stayed true to Lee’s personality. “We take Stan Lee’s words and import them into the model, and then we put rails on the side of it,” he said. “So he doesn’t go off and talk about things that Stan wouldn’t have said.”

During a demonstration at Comic Con, the holographic Stan Lee spoke about his love of fan conventions. “My favorite thing about being at a comic convention is getting to meet all the amazing fans and hearing their stories about how Marvel has impacted their lives,” said the hologram in Lee’s familiar voice.

While many fans were thrilled to see Lee back in any form, some expressed concern about the use of AI to recreate a deceased person. Supporters, however, see it as a respectful way to celebrate the life and work of a man who changed the world of comics forever.

The holographic Stan Lee marks a new era in fan experiences, combining nostalgia, technology, and storytelling. For fans unable to meet the creator in person, the AI version offers a rare chance to connect with the man who gave life to some of the world’s most famous superheroes.
