Starbucks is currently navigating its most severe labor strike, with over 120 stores across 85 US cities halting operations at a critical time during the holiday season.
The strike, initiated on November 13 during the Red Cup Day event at 65 locations, has rapidly escalated into a nationwide protest just as the peak shopping period approaches. This coordinated effort aligns with Black Friday, historically one of Starbucks’ busiest sales weekends, where the influx of customers and special offers typically boost sales significantly.
Although Starbucks claims that 99% of its stores are still in operation, the expanding strike poses increasing challenges to maintaining normal functioning. Workers represented by Workers United, comprising over 11,000 baristas nationwide, are advocating for better wages, adequate staffing, and resolutions to numerous outstanding issues regarding schedules and treatment at work.
This unrest mirrors a broader tide of labor actions seen in the retail and logistics sectors during the holiday season. On the same day as the Starbucks walkout, Amazon workers in Germany protested, while Zara employees in Spain rallied for improved workplace conditions, highlighting a rising trend of collective action during high-demand periods.
The mounting unrest presents a sensitive challenge for Starbucks, which is currently implementing strategies aimed at enhancing service efficiency and customer loyalty. Its recently launched Green Apron Service initiative, which has increased labor hours and boosted staffing levels, has shown promising early results, with a 1% uptick in global comparable sales last quarter after a prolonged decline, and a continuation of transaction growth into October.
However, the journey ahead is fraught with difficulties. Rising operational costs, inflation, and escalating labor expenses are pressuring profit margins. A prolonged strike could further strain the company’s efforts as it prepares for its first-quarter 2026 earnings report due in January.
At present, both the company and the workers seem entrenched in their positions, with the holiday season unfolding amid a labor dispute that appears unlikely to resolve soon.
