In an unexpected event in southern Brazil, a significant replica of the Statue of Liberty collapsed as high winds struck on Monday, December 15. The 24-metre structure, situated in the parking lot of a Havan store in Guaíba near Porto Alegre, fell without leading to any injuries.
Footage circulating on social media depicted the statue swaying alarmingly before it eventually toppled, all while traffic continued to flow along the nearby road. Positioned adjacent to a fast-food restaurant, the replica drew many onlookers and shoppers. Fortunately, the area was largely deserted at the time, which helped to avoid any casualties.
Earlier in the day, local authorities had issued a red alert, warning about the severe winds affecting the area. Civil defense officials urged the public to remain indoors, secure their properties, and unplug electrical devices as a safety measure. Nonetheless, the intense gusts proved too powerful for the iconic replica.
The Havan retail chain, which owns the statue, confirmed the incident and expressed their commitment to assist authorities in investigating the cause. Civil defense officials indicated that a technical review would be undertaken to understand the reasons behind the fall and to develop guidelines to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The incident of the Statue of Liberty replica swiftly became a hot topic online. In India, the phrase "statue of liberty fall down" topped Google Trends on Tuesday afternoon, with countless users searching for related queries such as "Brazil statue of liberty", "statue of liberty collapse", and "statue of liberty replica Brazil".
While strong winds have previously wreaked havoc across southern Brazil, the dramatic fall of this prominent Statue of Liberty replica has garnered worldwide attention. This situation underscores the necessity of safety protocols in regions susceptible to harsh weather, especially concerning large structures in public areas.
