Stefon Diggs, wide receiver for the New England Patriots, is in serious legal jeopardy after being charged with felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault during an alleged conflict with his former private chef.
These charges emerged following a court session on Tuesday in Dedham, Massachusetts. Court documents reveal that the incident reportedly took place in late November due to disagreements regarding payment for services rendered at Diggs’ residence.
According to police records, the woman claimed Diggs entered her bedroom while she was working as his private chef and became agitated during a confrontation about unpaid wages. She reported that Diggs struck her and subsequently restrained her from behind, putting his arm around her neck and making it hard for her to breathe. She expressed fear of passing out.
The police report also states that Diggs threw the woman onto a bed, dismissing her concerns about unpaid wages. The woman eventually left her job, returning in December to collect her things, only to be told she would have to sign a non-disclosure agreement before receiving her payment, which she refused.
Though initially reluctant to file charges, the woman later opted to pursue a criminal complaint, which led to the police filing charges against Diggs. His arraignment is set for January 23.
Diggs’ attorney, David Meier, firmly denied the allegations, claiming they are false and driven by financial disputes. He asserted that the incidents described by the accuser never occurred, emphasizing that Diggs maintains his innocence.
The New England Patriots have issued a concise statement supporting Diggs, affirming their backing as the legal situation unfolds.
At 32, Diggs is recognized as one of the premier wide receivers in the NFL, having achieved six straight 1,000-yard seasons from 2018 to 2023 with teams like Minnesota and Buffalo. Following a brief period in Houston, he signed a lucrative three-year, $69 million contract with New England, establishing himself as a vital target for quarterback Drake Maye.
Despite his impressive playing career and contribution to the Patriots’ regaining the AFC East title, Diggs’ off-field matters have attracted media attention previously. Recently, a social media video showed him interacting with some women on a boat while appearing to hand over a mysterious substance, though that incident did not result in any charges.
As the legal proceedings continue, the future of Diggs with the Patriots and his ability to participate in the postseason remains under scrutiny.
