Australian cricket legend Steve Smith has offered to mentor his struggling teammate Sam Konstas as the young opener works to regain form ahead of the Ashes series against England. Konstas, who has shown glimpses of talent, has faced challenges with shot selection and consistent run-scoring, leading to ongoing debate about Australia’s opening options. Smith’s willingness to provide guidance reflects his commitment to nurturing emerging talent in the national team.
Konstas’ domestic performances have raised concerns in cricketing circles. In a recent one-day match, the New South Wales batter was bowled for 20 after attempting to ramp Victoria paceman Cameron McClure. Observers noted that his erratic shot choices have made it difficult for him to establish himself as a reliable opener. These struggles come at a critical time as selectors finalise their squad for the five-test Ashes series, starting in Perth on November 21.
Despite the pressure on Konstas, Steve Smith has offered support and mentorship. “My door’s always open, my phone’s always on,” Smith told reporters in Sydney. “Whenever he wants to chat batting, I love talking batting and I’m happy to help wherever I can.” Smith emphasised that while guidance is valuable, young players must also find their own path, learning from both success and failure.
Smith reflected on his own journey, noting that he faced challenges early in his career but forged his own way with persistence and practice. He encouraged Konstas to take advice from various sources, including his batting coach and other experienced players in the team. Smith stressed that mentoring is most effective when the young player is willing to listen, reflect, and apply insights to improve performance on the field.
Despite Konstas’ struggles, Smith praised his natural ability against pace bowling. “From what I’ve seen he’s got so much time as a batter when he’s facing fast bowling — that’s something you can’t really teach,” he said. Smith highlighted that this strength provides a solid foundation for Konstas to build upon as he works on refining his technique and shot selection.
Smith concluded by acknowledging that while there are areas for improvement, Konstas possesses significant potential. “There are a few things he has to work on, but he’s a bright talent as we’ve seen and he’s got a bright future,” Smith said. With guidance from senior players like Smith and continued focus on his game, Konstas has the opportunity to solidify his place in the Australian team and contribute meaningfully in the upcoming Ashes series.
