Storm Goretti wreaked havoc in France and Britain as fierce winds, heavy rain, and snow battered northern Europe. This intense weather system left hundreds of thousands without electricity and caused transport services and schools to close down, severely impacting daily life.
In France, approximately 380,000 households faced power outages, with regions like Normandy and Brittany hit hardest. Strong winds damaged power lines and infrastructure, while the Manche region recorded some of the highest gusts at over 150 kilometers per hour. A staggering 213 kilometers per hour was noted in the coastal area of Barfleur, illustrating the storm's might.
The harsh weather conditions disrupted travel throughout France, leading the national rail operator to halt train services between Paris and Normandy due to safety risks. Fallen trees, debris on rail tracks, and unsafe wind conditions left many passengers stranded or compelled to postpone their trips.
In Britain, the situation was also dire, with the National Grid reporting around 57,000 homes without power amidst fresh snowfall following a week of chilly weather. Roads became treacherous due to snow and ice, significantly raising the risk of accidents, compounded by strong winds causing further power network damage.
Scotland and parts of central England experienced some of the worst effects. Authorities indicated that numerous schools were likely to remain closed as a protective measure for students and staff. Rail companies cautioned against unnecessary travel, and multiple train services were canceled or suspended.
Emergency teams and utility workers were mobilized across both countries to restore power and repair damaged infrastructure. Weather officials advised residents to stay indoors, limit travel, and heed local safety recommendations until conditions improved.
Storm Goretti serves as a stark reminder of how extreme weather can profoundly disrupt everyday life. With widespread power outages, transport systems compromised, and public services affected, the event has raised important questions about preparedness and resilience in the face of severe winter weather.
