During the G20 Leaders' Summit in Johannesburg, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to bolster ties between their nations. This pivotal discussion took place on the summit's sidelines, with an emphasis on enhancing bilateral collaboration.
The meeting also saw participation from senior Indian officials, such as External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Secretary of Economic Relations, Sudhakar Dalela. Both parties evaluated the existing partnership and investigated new avenues for collaboration, particularly in security, cultural exchanges, and economic growth.
President Ramaphosa welcomed PM Modi with open arms upon his arrival for the G20 Summit, a gesture reflecting the historical camaraderie between India and South Africa.
On the opening day, PM Modi led discussions in two sessions, spotlighting the cruciality of global collaboration, disaster resilience, and sustainable development. He emphasized that the international community must unite to address pressing challenges, thereby ensuring a balanced and inclusive future.
Utilizing his social media platforms, PM Modi shared insights regarding the summit's second session, which revolved around climate change resilience, just energy transitions, and global food system enhancement. He reiterated India's commitment to these objectives through a human-centered development model.
PM Modi also highlighted the formation of the Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group under India's G20 Presidency, stressing the need for a shift towards development-oriented disaster management. He pointed to the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure as evidence of this commitment.
In addition, he introduced a G20 Open Satellite Data Partnership designed to facilitate access to satellite data from G20 space agencies for developing nations, especially within the Global South. This endeavor aims to improve sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, environmental planning, and disaster preparedness.
Reiterating India's dedication to clean energy, PM Modi unveiled the G20 Critical Minerals Circularity Initiative, which seeks to advance recycling, urban mining, and innovative practices to ensure sustainable global mineral supply chains.
The discussions between PM Modi and President Ramaphosa are anticipated to lead to enhanced cooperation, strategic alignment, and new collaborative prospects between India and South Africa.
